In Latvia, three criminal and 20 administrative cases were initiated against citizens who came to the monument to Soviet soldiers in Victory Park in Riga, LETA writes with reference to the police.
“In connection with the events of May 10 at the Soviet monument in Pardaugava, the state police opened three criminal cases and 20 cases of administrative offenses,” said in the statement (quote from RIA Novosti).
One of the cases was brought against a man who came to the monument with the Russian flag, the agency writes. Another filed under the article on resistance to a representative of the authorities.
We are talking about the events of May 9 and 10. Local residents twice organized commemorative actions near the memorial and brought flowers to it, which were harvested by local authorities with a tractor. In addition, writes LETA, some of those who gathered at the monument on May 10 (about 500 people) were noisy: they sang songs and shouted slogans “glorifying Russia and the Soviet army.”
The day before, the Latvian Seimas suspended Art. 13 of the agreement between the governments of Latvia and Russia on guarantees for the safety of military memorials and allowed the demolition of Soviet monuments not installed at burial sites, including the monument to Soviet soldiers— liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from the Nazi invaders.

The police blocked access to the memorial.
The Russian Embassy in Latvia pointed out the illegality of the actions of local authorities and referred to Art. 15 of the same agreement, which stated that the party that signed the document cannot make any decisions on the issues raised in the document without the consent of the other party. The diplomats noted that Russia was not consulted on this matter.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to the decision of the Latvian Seimas, called the parliamentarians “ghouls”, and the speaker of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, said that a bulldozer has become a symbol of European democracy. In turn, the President's Special Representative for International Cultural Cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoi, called for the use of diplomacy to prevent the demolition of the monument.
