Ranil Wikramasinghe became the president of Sri Lanka, reports Reuters. This decision was made by the parliament: it was supported by 134 deputies out of 225. 82 voted for his rival, parliamentarian Dulla Allahaperuma.

Wikramasinghe will be president until 2024, when new popular elections will be held in the country. Since his predecessor retired, the new president was elected by the parliament before the end of the current term, as provided for by the Constitution.

Wickramasinghe, 73, has been the country's prime minister since May. He previously held this post in 1993–1994, 2001–2004, 2015–2018, 2018–2019. Wickramasinghe also served as Minister of Employment, Minister of Education, Minister of Industry, Minister of Finance, and Acting Minister of Defense.

The politician ran for president twice, in particular, in November he lost to the brother of the previous president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Past president Gotabaya Rajapaksa left office on 15 July. Reuters, citing a source, specified that the president, who left Sri Lanka, sent this statement by e-mail. AFP reported that Rajapaksa, who left the captured residence of Rajapaksa, flew to the Maldives with his wife.

Wikramasinghe became acting head of state, he introduced a state of emergency and a curfew due to ongoing protests.
